Sileo - (Dexmedetomidine Gel)

 Indications

Sileo is a rapidly acting gel, which is registered for use to reduce the extreme physical and mental feelings of anxiety and fear around noise events. It is typically used in pets storm or noise phobias. Sileo is particularly helpful for events that aren’t easily predictable, as it works so quickly. Ideally, the dose should be given 30-60 mins before any known triggering events.

How to use

Turn the dial of your Sileo syringe to the correct number of dots. The gel should be applied between the teeth and the cheek, and shouldn’t be swallowed. You may noticed that the area where the medicine is applied might go slightly paler. Please read the enclosed leaflet very closely as it contains detailed descriptions and pictures of how to use it properly.

If needed, the dose can be reapplied every 2 hours, for a maximum of 5 doses in a row. An open syringe needs to be used up within 4 weeks.

What is it?

Sileo belongs to a group of medications called alpha-2-agonists. These medications work to change the levels of noradrenaline (part of the adrenaline family) and other hormones in the body. It has a wide range of effects, including on blood pressure, muscle relaxation, behaviour. For pets that feel the physical effects of their anxiety, managing the amount of ‘flight or fight’ hormones in the body may help to lessen their arousal.

Side effects

The most common side effects of Sileo include vomiting, sedation, gastric upset, or drowssiness.  This medication should not be used in pets with known heart disease.

Drug interactions

Sileo should be used cautiously with pets on other medications that affect blood pressure and the heart. Speak to your veterinarian if you have any concerns about using Sileo.
